Medical Detox
Our medical detox treatment centers also serve as a place of safety and security for people who have struggled with (or are currently struggling with) prostitution, rape, domestic violence, or other physical, mental, and social issues as a result of their substance abuse. We also encourage women who are pregnant and suffering from drug addiction to contact us as soon as possible in order to reduce or even curtail any potential harm done to their child.
A Medical Detox Treatment Center Just For You
Detox centers play a crucial role in addiction treatment. First and foremost, they can offer a place of safety for people who feel they have lost control of their lives.
- What drugs/alcohol the person has taken/used?
- When was the last dose of the substance consumed?
- What drug doses the person is accustomed to
- How long has the abuse been ongoing?
- How many times has the person attempted to get sober historically?
- What was the outcome of these attempts?
Our team of caring and compassionate medical professional then create a custom medical detox protocol utilizing medications, nutritional components, emotional counseling, and alternative medicine as needed. Patients enrolled may accept or decline any part of the prescribed protocol, and then the process begins.
How Does Medical Detox Work?
As a patient progresses through the detox process, our team keeps a watchful eye on their physical, mental and emotional makeup in order to course-correct any potential points of irritation or severity along the way. Medication doses may be adjusted and adapted based on health metrics gathered during the process in real-time and some therapies utilized may require further customization, changes to the type of therapy, or even cessation based on current detox progression and measurements. Rest assured that there is always a member of the Brazos Place team nearby to monitor and act as needed along the way so that the patient moving through the detox process is always assisted and protected.
Though there is no predicting the end to a medical detox period, the point of exit from detox typically occurs when the patient with the addiction is no longer taking any type of medicinal aid and is able to comfortably move into a therapeutic program phase in order to build on their medical detox completion.
In order to appropriately approach both aspects of medical detox in more detail, it’s necessary to breakdown our detox programs into separate areas of emphasis, for both alcohol and drug treatment.
Alcohol Detox
The symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol can begin in a human’s body as soon as six hours after they had their last drink, but for many, the side effects of withdrawal take an additional day to manifest. Alcohol detox can be broken down into these stages:
- Initial Period – This period can begin as quickly as 6 to 8 hours after the individual’s last drink. Anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and abdominal pain are some of the side effects. During acute withdrawal, seizures and tremors are possible. As the first few days progress, the patient may experience increased heart rate and blood pressure, profuse sweating, and digestive problems.
- Adjustment Period – As the physical symptoms diminish, the patient may experience more behavioral changes. Anxiety and changes in mood and sleep patterns can arise.
- Escalated Period – The final stage of alcohol detox can result in elevated anxiety and uneasiness. It may be referred to as delirium tremens, which occurs in up to 5% of individuals going through alcohol detox. The third stage is the most severe and can also result in fever, severe confusion, and agitation.
Factors such as length of time drinking, amount consumed during use, family history of addiction, medical history, stress, and more, can affect the detox process.
Drug Detox
The initial period of drug detox can be intense for many patients, which is why medical supervision is always on hand at Brazos Place to support and care for the patient. The side effects of drug detox can vary depending on the substances abused in the past with some common symptoms including:
- Sweating
- Tremors
- Anxiety
- Agitation
- Muscle aches
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Insomnia
- Cravings
The length of addiction, drugs abused, dosage of drugs abused, and the existence of mental or physical disorders can all affect the process and length of the drug detox. Medicated detox involves the usage of certain medications to ease the discomfort of the detox process.
